Richard's Reflections (May 2026)

There is a lot happening in our world. I suppose you could always say that, but at the moment it does seem that there is a lot going on. As I write this there is a very significant visit by King Charles III to the United States. The situation in the Middle East has been very serious for some time now. There is much need in many countries where food is in short supply.

This month includes Christian Aid week. In this magazine, Peter outlines some of the ways that they are working to alleviate the situation in a number of places. We will have the opportunity to view a video featuring experts in the area of nature and climate change. There are significant implications for our planet if changes are not made.

What then can we, as Christians say about all of these things, and many more? I think we can do no better than quote Psalm 46 v 1 - 3

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

In the middle of all that are these words “we will not fear.” There are some terrible things being described here, and yet we don’t need to be afraid, why? Because God is our refuge and strength. We can put our trust in him whatever is happening, and be confident that he is with us. And the reason we can be so confident is that he has been faithful in providing his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ who came to this earth for us. As the Apostle Paul wrote:

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Romans 8 v 32

Be encouraged. Don’t be afraid. Trust in God, our refuge and strength.

Since Jesus is with you, do not be afraid;

since he is your Lord, you need not be dismayed:

he strengthens you, guards you, and helps you to stand,

upheld by his righteous, omnipotent hand.
